Exactly right, Bob. Indeed, TIME difference between sound arrival at the two ears is the primary determinant of the direction of a sound. It is FAR more important than loudness. This is the basis of the best of the stereo sound patents, by Bell Labs c.a. 1936. It depends on spaced microphones and spaced loudspeakers.
