Carter: COM3 is sometimes used by internal modems, and there may be a conflict there. Has Windows been updated recently? Sometimes COM port assignments change without warning.
Remove the USB connector from the computer. Then use Windows's Device Manager (a control panel applet), and open the list under Ports (COM & LPT) and see what the current devices are. Then plug in your KXUSB to the computer. A new COM port should appear, that's your KX3's COM port. Also, it's possible to use the KX3 Utility's Port tab and try each of the ports available under the port selection drop-down box. There's a KX3 Utility Help page under Troubleshooting titled "Finding the Right COM port".
