This paddle was on display at Dayton, (If memory serves me correctly) and I got to use it. I observed the same thing, but if you like wider spacing, I remember that you can "flip" the arms so the paddles mount outside and push on the brass. Might also be simple enough to add a piece of brass stock that the screw pushes against to reinforce things.

It looks to be a fine piece of engineering, Eric, apart from the paddles which seem very fragile. Considering that the force of the thumb and index finger will be pushing against the paddles which only have a screw head supporting them, my guess is that one would need to be very light fisted. Just an observation from the picture - I could be wrong.
