Hello Noel, Which roofing filter did you have engaged at the time? If it was significantly wider than the minimum bandwidth needed to accurately decode a RTTY signal, then pumping of the AGC could occur which is likely what you heard. I don't operate RTTY so I don't know which roofing filter would be optimum, but I'm sure other RTTY op's can help.
