... OCRA got a nice Field Day publicity article (and 100 point bonus) anyway:
http://www.herald-sun.com/orange/10-747205.html The 20CW and 40CW positions this year both were running Electaft K1 sets. This is the 1st year since 2000 that I gave K2 #0771 a late June break, although, as always, my K2 was still powered on, just sitting at home. As you'd expect, the K1 radios did yeoman's duty. Everyone was wowed. One op, a former K2 owner was convinced (by me, of course) to re-join the Elecraft ranks by ordering up a new K1. He was on the fence with a KX1, so I "helped him out." What are friends for? I mentioned that the K1 was often available on the pre-built aftermarket, and he just made a face, stating "I'll build my own. It's not the radio itself, the experience is in the journey." Wiser words are seldom spoken. Next year, I will bring the K2 back. I just prefer K2 AGC action a bit more; not a complaint on the K1 (it's really good) but the K2 is better, and the K2 has superior dynamic range as well. Even a QRP Field Day can show the Gilbert cell mixer limits, but the K1 also has a switchable attenuator with a LED to tell you it's on ... pretty smart to do that ... it's important to mention that we users *DO* notice and appreciate the efforts of the designers. Oh, and, BOY! that K1 backlight makes a difference. Hope everyone had a good time, and that you didn't have to deal with the lightning / downpours that we did. (My feedline was sparking, and that was just on induction from cloud-cloud strikes about a kM away. Neat!) In these parts, a CW op gets prestige treatment and lots of respect, a cold IBC root beer, and the driest spot at the site! Morse ops (all ops, really) will always be welcomed. PS: is there anyone here from the VE3DC Field Day team? ;-) We need to chat. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
