The mod applies to the ability to increase the sensitivity (gain) of the amp by bypassing the input attenuator so that it can be driven to a useful power output with a lower power exciter. There isn't any suggestion that the amp should be driven beyond its normal power level. Hence unless the exciter was dirty, clean signals is not part of the equation.
