I never bought any extra stuff for my internal 2M transverter and I've used it on quite a few VHF contests etc. So, as far as I'm concerned, the REFLOCK option is definitely NOT required for normal 2M CW/SSB contacts. The regular calibration routine gets me close enough for anything I'd be doing.
