You should use the standard Apple FTDI driver. It works.

I had similar problems to yours until I purged my system of all non-Apple drivers.

BTW, I am now running Mojave 10.14.6. I'm back here so I can run my 32 bit applications like cocoaModem and cocoaNEC.
