It remembers mode per band as last used.

Now, if you turn the radio off by switching off the power supply first, it likely won't remember the last mode.   There is a power down imminent circuit that saves the data when one powers down the radio by the front panel switch.   If one shuts the power supply off, the PDI circuit does not save the last used data.    Notice when one presses the POWER switch the radio does not go off immediately?  This is the PDI doing its job.

Being an intermittent problem, it is hard for me to figure out but I am
hoping some of you have seen and solved this...

Let's say I am on 40, LSB; sometimes when I change bands to 20M, it
stays in LSB; sometimes it correctly changes to USB.

Any ideas what is going on or how to fix it?
