My base station consists primarily of a K2 / KPA100 / KAT100 with an MP-2 SuperAntenna hung out of my third floor apartment window. Not exactly the setup you are inquiring about, but similar enough to merit comparison.
I have no problems with this setup. I generally remotely move the coil/motor assembly contact into rough position, transmit a low-power signal and fine-tune the position of the contact to minimize SWR as indicated on an in-line SWR meter. Once having done this, I then hit the tune button on the K2.
