I would like to set my fans to run at medium speed ALL THE TIME!!
My neighbor, K6XX, is the engineer at Elecraft tasked with putting the
KPA1500 into production. He got burned out (lost everything) in last
summer's wildfire, and borrowed my KPA1500 for a weekend contest. I had
done what you suggest, because I work lots of FT8 on 6M. I told him the
fans in the RF deck were sounding funny. Ge said when he opened it up,
the fans were full of dust. Bob told me to set the lowest fan speed to
zero, and let the firmware adjust as needed. I've been doing that for a
year, with no issues. Running at 1.1kW on 6M WSJT modes (his
recommendation), the fans speed up to keep indicated temp below around
63 C. During heavy RTTY contesting at 1.5kW, it will hit 90 C. He says
no problem.
