I achieved some limited degree of success last night with my USB to Serial adapter cable.
Thanks to the excellent recommendation/endorsement from Paul Gates, KD3JF and Don Nesbitt, N4HH, I visited the I.O.Gear web-site and downloaded the USB-Serial Driver for the GUC232A cable. http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=dm Installing the driver was just a little tricky; I had to uninstall the old driver (following instructions from the MS Windows Tech Support web-site). I also downloaded the GIC232A Manual from I.O.Gear. The driver installed and showed up as "Prolific USB Serial". Again following the instructions from the KIO2 manual, I conducted the Menu "PORT" test and "Eureka!" the radio responded to commands from the Hyper Terminal, perfectly. Unfortunately, I labeled it a limited success because when I attempted to connect my K2 with my “Ham Radio Deluxe” software things did not run smoothly. There appeared to be a huge latency issue between HRD and the K2. The full frequency from my K2 did not always show up on HRD and commands from the HRD to the K2 were delayed about 8-10 seconds. After running HRD straight to a Serial input and experiencing a seamless interface this was disappointing. But alas that is something that I will work on with HRD and I really don’t consider that a major issue, as I know that I will work it out. I have faith in Simon Brown and the HRD forum. For what it may be worth it seemed that changing positions of the USB cable from one USB connection (on the back of the computer) and there by changing my COM Port settings gave me different results. My system did not seem to like COM Port 3 or 4, but by moving to a different USB connection and changing to COM Port 5 and 6 showed very good results. It may be worth a try. The point is that the I.O.Gear GUC232A software worked.
