I suspect you may be right. When feeding computer audio to the Line Input, the Mic Gain knob becomes Line In Gain, but Line In Gain must be adjusted with Line In selected, Mic Gain must be selected with Mic, selected, then switch to Mic + Line to operate. I suspect one or the other of the two may be set too high.

OR -- output from the computer itself may be set too low, so it may have been necessary to turn Line up very high, and you're hearing noise from the computer's output.
