Mark,
I am guessing that bias voltage is being supplied from another route or
that MH4 would not work. Some ops place the resistor on the mic
configuration header as opposed to the mic connector itself. That may
explain why it is working in the other rig.

Yes. I fitted a 5K6 resister about 3 mins ago and it works. What is
curious is the other rig also has no resistor but just works, with both
microphones. That is the one with the trimmers in the wrong place but
again works. If I am stranded on a desert Island I know which rig I
want, the one that seems to just like working.
