It sounds like the same thing that happened to my K2. In my case the floating mike connector socket was the problem. You might try grounding this socket. My K2 would lock up when my hand would approach the VFO knob. My problem was solved by grounding the eight pin mike connector. There is a procedure to do this in the mods section on the Elecraft site. Roy Morris W4WFB
