Another point to remember, many people have been injured and some killed by a non-direct lightning strike. Last year a person was killed and several others injured while taking refuge under a large tree. The tree was the highest point and a huge bolt struck the tree, tearing bark off and travelled through the wet ground to the people. All this energy needs to dissipate and ground is the usual target.
With this in mind, during the dry season, it is very important to keep your ground rods wet and the area all around them, use a hose to drip on their location and give them a good deep soaking.
