Looking at my KX3 I find the batteries are in series as you would expect but
thereare hidden wires. I numbered batteries from Pos end.
Plug is wired with two red wires connected as one and
hooked to the #1 batteryThe wiring order is #1,#4,#3,#2Bat #2 black wire
spliced to red wire into second holder.Second holder wired exactly in same
order as first.Output is black wire from second holder which is splitinto two
wires to the plug.

I can believe it wouldn’t power up with NiMH cells, six of those is only 7.2 V.
I would look up the part number and get new battery holders.
