The issue with remote operation is LATENCY -- that is, how long does it
take for an instruction to get from our computer to the radio, and how
long does it take data to get from the radio to our radio. That's
measured in msec, and is determined by the entire path -- our network,
the radio's network, and the internet. If the radio is on our own
network, only that network is involved.
This mostly matters with contesting and DX-chasing, where timing is
everything, not much if at all with casual QSOs.
For several years, Starlink has been fast enough for major expeditions
to be operated remotely from almost anywhere.
