Thank you to WE6R, K6MKE and WA6VAB for their suggestions.  It looks like the 
case has got to be opened up.   I am going to have to find someone to do that. 
As a disabled Vet my hands are very shaky!  Maybe I can talk one of the locals 
to do that.  Any volunteers located in Northwest Indiana?
From everyone's suggestions the most likely problem is a loose board or 
connection.  I am wondering if it is "thermal" related as  the problem seems to 
usually occur after the unit has be on for an extended period of  time and is 
quite warm to touch.  Could the heat cause the joints to expand and separate?  
I don't know.  I hadn't thought to check the unit temps.
In the meantime I will try to impose on one of the locals to take a peek 
inside.  Hoping for the best.
