I'm using a new Astron RS-20A. I used it during the build/test phase
and now operating. It is overkill for the stock K2, but when I
eventually build the amplifier, I'll need it. I know lots of guys use
gel-cell batteries to power their K2s. Maybe somebody more
knowledgeable about the K2s power requirements can speak up about
using other sources like computer power supplies, etc.

the last five years. With the small mod described below, I find it very easy to
control. It allows me to cover all of the 40m CW band, and to get 10 MHz WWV on
the 30m band. It also allows coverage of most of the CW portion of 15m, which
will be more valuable when the solar cycle starts to pick up again in a few years.
You'll be able to tune about 20 kHz into the lower part of the 40m phone segment.
Since the K1 receiver always functions in LSB mode, it would be possible to have
cross-mode QSOs at the lower end of 40m, should the need arise.

kHz/turn is *not* a very rapid tuning rate. What I think most of these folks are actually
experiencing is a problem that results from the the VFO potentiometer shaft having very very
little resistance to rotation. It is very easy to cause unintended dial adjustment as you
remove your fingers from the knob. With a 80 kHz span, the effects of this are far less
apparent. The solution is simple. Get a sheet of thin felt material and cut several
circular, holed, "washers" which can be laid around the VFO pot shaft, between the
back of the VFO knob and the front of the panel. Add just enough layers until you get a
very slight resistance to motion, while the knob still remains easy and smooth to turn.
Then it will be very easy to let go of the knob without introducing unwanted changes.

Thanks for the info. With what you have said along with other responses
I am going to set up my K1 for 170 kHz.

I built mine originally for 80 khz. With the bands changing and wanting
coverage past 7080 on 40
meters, I redid mine for 150 Khz. It is a bit toucher to tune now but much
better coverage. I have
a 2 band card I built for 160 and 80 meters which resides in my K1 with the
coming of good
conditions on 160.

This morning i will be out enjoying the scenery in the famous Garden of
the Gods Park in Colorado Springs, CO. i will be on 14060 +/- using my KX1 with
a 10 foot whip while out hiking around the park. 9/30/06 Op times estimated to
be 1615 to 1700z.
Paul w0rw/pm
--------
The Garden of the Gods Park has an abundance of plant and animal life
thoughout its 1,340 acres, 8 miles of trails, as well as the magnificent red
sandstone rock formations, for which the Garden is best known. Many of these
were
generated by really big earthquakes and sculpted through time by erosion. The
park is very popular and has about 1 million visitors each year. Maybe you have
been there, can you remember the Kissing Camels, Balanced Rock, Ship Rock,
Praying Hands, The Scotsman, or the face of Chief Manitou on the side of Gray
Rock?
i will have a special 'GOG' QSL Card available, This is the most
beautiful park in the State of Colorado.
For more park details on line see http://www.gardenofgods.com/parkinfo/
or http://www.co-trading-post.com/tp_html/gar-hist.htm

W0RW/pm/KX1 will be Pedestrian Mobile (Peripateticus Mobilus Elecraftus)
hiking around in the park using a 10 foot whip and a 13 foot counterpoise.
There aren't too many overhanging trees to snag my antenna so this should be 'a
walk in the park'.
i will be using the great 300 foot tall granite monoliths as reflectors to
the east and west as i walk around.
i will be totally powered by those exploding Sony LiIon cells.

Guys,

Here a problem I don't understand.
K2 # 3612 with:
NB
SSB
20W intrnal tuner

The problem:
When listening on SSB filter OPT1, 40m band and antenna connected, a bit
of bandnoise is present. The S-meter is on S 5-7 or so with no signals
around.
Signals are clear. When they are strong the S meter functions as it
should with those signals. With no signal meter drops back to S 5-7.
Switching in the the other filters (width 2.12, 1.87, 1.78) at that time
(no signals present) makes the S-meter drop to S 0-1 and bandnoise is
more audible and S-meter flickering on QRN and so, as it should I think.

It seems that something is triggering the AGC when I switch in the OPT1
filter, but I cannot figure out what it is and why.
The funny (?) thing is that if using the OPT1 filter, the s-meter reacts
to switching off the pre-amp and switching in the attenuator (as
expected)
Disconnect the antenna and the s-meter also drops to S 0.

I've taken out the NB and the tuner: no change in this behaviour.

Sure in need of good advice.

Thanks in advance.

Does CW 45-70WPM Mp3 practice files exist anywhere to learn the morse code?

ARRL MP3 practice files only go to 40WPM.

Need to start higher to attain a 35-45 wpm base.

I worked Paul for a 559 from his KX1. I was running my KX1 at 2W into a
hamstick on top of the car, parked at the Winterlodge Skating Rink in
Palo Alto. I gave Paul 539. There was some QRN from nearby machinery. If
you do a Google image search on "garden of the gods" my pix are the
first hit.

The program MorseGen on my website will generate MP3 practise files at up
to 60WPM. It's free, but you are welcome to donate if you feel that
programmers deserve to eat.

Just got my October issue of CQ and saw a review of this very small power
supply made by Gamma Research, model HPS-1a. It is 3.37 X 1.55 X 5.25 inches,
rated at 13.8 VDC, 22 amps at 25% duty cycle and 5 amps continuous, and weighing
only 1.25 lbs. If you do not get CQ, then the company's web site
(www.gammaresearch.net) provides information.

Has anyone tried this with a K2/100 rig?

Hi Henry, you can buy a power supply which is more powerful and I
use daily for a FT-857D for SSB and CW which is made by MFJ. It is the
MFJ-4125 which is rated at 25 Amps all the time and it SAYS "no noise on
all Ham bands", and it sells for $100.00.

Your power supply doesn't even mention power supply noies.

My Elecraft arrived! It's so new and shiny, I haven't even found the
serial number yet! Happy happy happy! Joy joy joy!

Now to power the thing...

Any recommendations on power supplies? I've got a 12v power supply for
a pair of powered speakers...is this sufficient for assembly purposes?
After all, I can't operate just yet.

Good Evening,
This evening I got my telescope out of storage and dusted it off. I
wanted to see if I could find Uranus near lambda Aquarius. I put a 2x
Barlow in one pocket, my homemade LED light in the other, and carried my
telescope to the clearcut above me. Pegasus was easily found due to its
bright, square asterism. To get my mind back into viewing the night sky
through a telescope I star-hopped to M31 and M32. Wow am I rusty! But I
was competing with a half moon about 90 degrees away. I had to shade the
side of my eyes to limit the glare. I could not get a good look at either
Aquarius or Capricorn since they were nearer the moon and are drawn from
dimmer stars than Pegasus. Now that I've found a good spot to view Uranus
I'll wait until the moon is further along in its path.
After a warm week the temperature started to drop today. At dinner
time I finally gave in a built a fire. Sam is in his box next to the wood
stove and looks quite content. Hopefully the autumn rains will hold off
for a week so I can get a bit more accomplished outside. I moved quite a
few boxes and furniture today and located two 15 or 20 amp lines. Pat
must have run those two before we moved to Albuquerque. I hooked my DVM
to them and flipped breakers to see if I could light them up. No luck. I
may have to dig through the crawlspace to find where they are terminated.
Another option is to put a battery on them and check for 12 VDC on other
boxes to see where each stub runs. She left far too many mysteries for me
to solve. I wish I could ask her for a few answers!
I've not been on the air this week other than on the MARS net so can
not predict what will happen tomorrow. I'll simply hope for the best and
call CQ ECN and see who I get. SpaceWeather.com lists a sunspot number of
38. This may be good. Depends on what else is going on with our
ionosphere. Much like the weather rock it is simpler, and more reliable,
to simply look and see what is going on in our neighborhood.

    Please join us:

Monday 0200z (Sunday 7pm PDT) 7045 kHz

Until tomorrow,

Hi Dick
I'm not sure, but did you check the K7QO website and his good CW course?
http://www.k7qo.net/

Moreover you can use RFZXP (I don't have the bookmark but you can look for
in Google), and finally also can use the sw:
Just Learn Morse code at:
http://justlearnmorsecode.com/

They are quite good in order to make a fast speed practice.

Hope to be useful for you.
