For Weller products:
I would not recommend a "gun" to build a Elecraft kit -- that uses printed
circuit boards.
The "TCP" series has been made for 40+ years and still in production (WTCPT
current model).
The "PT" tips for this model are interchangeable for all versions from
original Weller W-TCP/WTCPL (1966/1967) to present. Iron / station works on
the Curie principle (ferrous alloy plug at base of tip determines the
temperature that the tip will reach). OKI/Metcal based their design on
these Weller patents (but they use RF for heating).
No 'idiot' knob to get confused or have someone accidentally move -- built
for soldering production lines -- used by Grumman for Lunar Module and
Collins for "S" line and general rework stations (that is where I got my
first one surplus and learned how to repair them !)
Plentiful, easy to repair - good tip selection.
"EC" series ~ mid 1970s to 2002. The Electronic Control series was made for
25 years and discontinued in 2002. WES51 replaced it for an entry level
station (uses the same tips)
Surplus readily available. Repair on older models can be tricky - depending
upon model some repair parts can be more difficult to locate. The irons for
this series (EC1201 and 1302B) are still current Weller production - and
available.
Uses the "ET" series of tips -- which are also used with the WES51 entry
level station.
WES51 is Weller's current entry level station -- equivalent in Hakko is the
model 936-12
About same price range $85 to $100 depending on where you buy.
Santa (my) refurbishment sleigh is FULL ..
I have all styles currently W-TCP; WTCPN; WTCPS; WTCPT(2 in boxes); a
beautiful DEC1001 with 2 irons (from surface mount to boatanhor with that
station) -- just finished a 2 month refurbishment session. I have parts --
if you find a broken one - and almost all of the Tech Sheets (that are in my
catalog) for your DIY are on BAMA.

So Bob, what would you like for Christmas?
Have you been a good Elecraft builder this past year?
