At most hamfests, I see wall warts for sale cheap (a buck or two). The heavier ones (and older ones) are more likely to be linear. I put Power Pole connectors on all my ham gear, and most of my computer peripherals), then run it off of 12V batteries that are float-charged by small power supplies. It's a very effective "poor man's UPS." You simply need to to size the supply so that it doesn't overcharge the battery.
