I need to correct the statement below. I should have said, "For full output, you'll need more than the 10 watts the low power version of the K2 provides."
As I went on to say, I don't know how much you'll get with only 10 watts of power. For full output, you'll need 100 watts from the K2. It'll surely provide reduced output with reduced drive, but I don't know how much you'll get with 10 watts drive. I don't understand your concern about the K2/100. The K2 was *designed* as a QRO rig! It just happened that Wayne/Eric released the 10 watt version of the K2 first. A primary reason I chose the K2 back in 1999 was that the amp was part of the design. Several ops who wanted to retain the low-power, internal battery and ATU options for the 10 watt version of the K2 have developed a way to mount the KPA100 in a separate E2 enclosure. Legally Elecraft couldn't provide the instructions to do that, but if you ask here you'll get a number of references to the instructions. That seems a very popular way to retain the low-power K2 and have QRO when you want it from the home station. I don't have any experience with the KPA100 mounted externally. I've always operated my K2/100 as an integrated rig just as it was intended. Will the soon-to-be-sold new Amplifier(s) coming out by Elecraft - be able to be fully driven by a bare bones basic K2? As always a fan of separate units; xcvr, amp, tuner, swr/power metering. I'm trying to end up with a CW/SSB decent wattage K2. I can't get myself to go the top-cover amplifier KPA100 route. IMHO - not the way to go for me. I guess what I'm driving at (!) - is what is the min. drive power required of these new amplifiers?
