Harold,

If the mic element is an electret type, yes the mic needs power. Use a 5600 ohm resistor in most cases. If the resistor is omitted, behavior will be as you describe.

You will have to consult the information for the mic plug pinout to determine which pins the resistor connects across. If this is to be your only mic (or all your other mics are similar), add the resistor at the mic jack pins.
