If I had a choice between the two I would go with wake on serial port activity. I'd rather not have to come up with a way to control a relay via remote to turn the radio on/off.

If the radio is OFF and you use the contact closure provision on the rear panel, it is indeed OFF.

If you use the alarm function, it is sleeping and drawing current. I don't recall the number offhand, but I think it is in the range of 50 to 300 mA.

A "wake on serial port activity" would necessarily be in a similar range, which is part of the reason it doesn't yet -- and may not -- exist.
