There are some folks who simply prefer email lists over web-based forums. I ended up having both a web based forum and a mailing list for the Drakelist....and while both are active communties, there are many on the email list who don't do the forum thing and vice versa.

FWIW I was losing the plot with only the mailing list. I still have the Yahoo! mailing list but the forums are where I provide support for my users, also there is a small key group of supporters which regularly help the bewildered.

I think the best solution is one where both forum users and email users receive the same information...that's what the Yahoo Groups model does...and there are
the benefits of being able to post files for download, etc.

I'm not sure if Google Groups has similar structure.

I am still searching for something that will let me port the majordomo messages to the forum and vice versa....so I don't have the luxuary that the combo model afford.

I have seen an example of doing that without having to deal with Yahoo or Google. I think it was the Ubuntu Linux forum <http:// www.ubuntuforums.org>, but don't know how they routed between the two venues.
