The discussion about the UI of an SDR suggests a new solution is needed. Imaging a new type of CW key (and microphone) with an area for common harware controls like tune, keyer speed and memory selection, filter select/adjust, RIT, volume, noise blanker, etc. It could include a control for the cursor on the panadapter and a method to make a selection. All of these controls would be user definable to personalize your operating preferances.
Lets hope it works more intuitive than the BMW iDrive.
