I would be interested in SMT kits from Elecraft. AmQRP.org is looking at offering upgrade boards for the micro908 two ways. One will have the fine pitch devices installed, all the kit builder would need to solder would be caps, resistors connectors, etc. The other option would be a full kit, more of a challenge, but still workable for many. Probably wouldn't be much fun if you're vision challenged or have the shakes or have inquisitive pets ;o)
I would suggest that the kits are not as frightening as one might think. The micro908 is a complicated piece of equipment, but after the first couple components I found that SM construction was fun. There are plenty of free obsolete computer boards available to practice your soldering technique on before diving into a kit.
