I had my K1 originally setup for 80 khz. I redid it for 150 khz. It actually covers about 170 khz now! It does get a bit touchy, but still very nice. I have since replaced my ten turn pot (tuning control) with the metal shafted one and it is MUCH better. The plastic shafted one was "OK" but got a bit sloppy after a couple of years of use. If you plan to use the rig as a primary rig, I'd say install the metal shafted pot from the get-go! They are under $20 shipped from Mouser as I remember. There is also a "mod" to restrict the range of the "RIT tuning" as it is VERY touchy to set in a sharp bandpass mode. It's just a matter of shunting the RIT pot with a resistor. Forget what value now.

Rich,

Both 80 and 150 kHz have their adherents. 80 kHz will give you tuning that's less touchy, though I've never had trouble with 150 kHz, even without the "felt mod." The wider band will let you hear WWV on 10 MHz and get you into some less crowded frequencies -- especially helpful when there's a big contest on, for example. You can't go "wrong" either way, I don't think. You might search the archives for "K1 tuning range" for more opinions.

AFAIK, CW is the only digital mode supported by the K1.

Good luck.
