You may want to keep in mind that grounding an antenna
when it is not used may not be a good idea. It is
possible to significantly distort patterns with the
wrong combination. It may be worth detuning an antenna
before grounding it to minimize this effect.
This may be more of an issue with multiple vertical
antennas on harmonic frequencies.

True. I had +/- the same experience. Due to the size limitations of my lot I
need to 'cross polarize' between 80 and 160m. I had a working 80m dipole and
added a 160m dipole, which ruined the 80m resonance and I never got 160m
working (resonance not to be found). Now I have an 80m vertical and a shorty
160m dipole, within 10m of each other and no problem at all (not even in
SO2R @ 1kW).
