Hi Steve,

When a mic is plugged into the front panel mic jack (there's one on the rear panel, too), it can interfere more with the bottom dual-concentric knob than the upper. AF GAIN is used far more often, on average, so it deserves the less-impacted panel position.

Headphone plugs are skinnier, and can even be obtained in a right-angle style, so they remain out of the way. (Of course you can plug your headphones into the rear panel, too.)

We back and forth on this a few times, but on balance it's easier in the new location.
