Frank,
Hi Duane!
Nice resonse to Bill, W4ZV's comments about knobs and the
unsuitibility of graphic UI's. He takes the oportunity to
denigrate the Flex HW, and its UI approach (PowerSDR) every
chance he can get. You may want to point out to him that the
K3 can only have the point an click UI (even PowerSDR)
integrated with it by a third party add on. But he neglects
to note that the Flex/PowerSDR can also have a knobs and
buttons panel added to it if someone so desires. But in
reality so few experienced PowerSDR users find a knob
useful, so knobs/buttons add-ons have never evolved very far
for it. To me that is quite telling.
Last Saturday I played host to a friend of mine who just so happens to
be a FOC member (I'm FC, just haven't got the membership yet ;-)). His
reaction upon confronting the Flex was predictable, "No knobs!",
"Useless! I can't use a radio without knobs!" etc. However, within 5
minutes of sitting him down and explaining the UI to him he was hooked!
He was pointing and shooting dx, scrolling with the mouse, qsy'ing with
the keyboard, ragchewing in cw etc. His most memorable quote was, "Wow
thats cool, I can read cw from the panadapter!" :-)
His excerpt from the Top Band posting by K1LT was 'cherry
picked', and somewhat out of context while ignoring the
broader implications of what K1LT has achieved, and is
striving for. The K3, while no doubt a wonderful radio, will
be HW constrained from ever actually doing the same. One of
these days some major HF contester will make him eat his
words about PC UI's, PowerSDR as it is today will not likely
do it. But the future UI's derived from it certainly will at
some point. Meanwhile in the future K3's button function
assignments will still be mostly the same....
I have no doubt the K3 will be a great radio (it's on my wish list) and
I also have no doubt that it is but a question of time before a SDR wins
a major contest. If I was competing against K1LT I'd be taking note of
what he's doing and asking what he's hoping to achieve.
I've seen his posts about PC based UI's before. I've even
debated with him via discusion board postings in the past on
this very topic.... ;).
His other favorite shot at the Flex radio will be remarks
about its 123 dB wide spaced BDR.
The performance of my 5000 is simply stunning, it is in a different
league to anything I have ever used previously and yes that includes
K2's and fully tricked out MK 5's.
