I agree that 80mA is much compared to K1`s own 55mA.
Elecraft KDSP2 takes 60mA (10mA in standby) and might not go in K1. Maybe an external unit is better. It can be left at home with power supply and current consumption.

Experience shows that input level should be from loudspeaker line.
Specs say 10mVrms min input for Lo unit, 100mVrms for Hi unit.
