Dave, I have had no problems using 12V while leaving the 9V battery installed.
Although I don't use mine to drive an external speaker directly, I just tried it using the 9V battery, and an old computer speaker, and it worked fine. The errata changes were made so that the left and right channels would be commoned. I have had some 1/8" plugs and jacks that have had some inherent problems.
