One solution is to wire in a speaker/headphone toggle switch when you replace the jack; then leave the headphones plugged in all the time. That will eliminate wear on the jack. (It's also lot more convenient if you do a lot of plugging and unplugging of the headphones.) I mounted the switch on the rear panel, below the speaker jack.
