Ed, One possible explanation for what you are experiencing is a narrow bandwidth in your receiving antenna. My HF-2V with 160m kit and top-loading is only good for about 20 KHz bandwidth. Large excursions away from the antenna resonant point yield similar results for me on both my K2 and Omni 6.
