I don't recall anyone answering the original question of why "roofing filters" The term has been used in the UK for many many years. Imagine you are in a well designed tent and it is capable of keeping you warm and dry in "normal" weather conditions but during a cloud burst water may start to enter the tent. The solution, as all you happy campers know, is to put a fly sheet over the tent and the problem is over.
