I think of it as follows:

1.  NORM settings are fixed by the factory and not alterable by the user.
2.  ALT1 and ALT2 are set by the user and are alterable (if new settings are
saved).
3.  I/II are "scratchpad" memories that recall the last setting they were
set to.
