What makes me think it's the serial port is that connecting the serial cable doesn't increase the noise level, it's only when the computer is polling the radio (i.e. traffic over the cable). I've already addressed general computer hash and that's down to an inaudible level. I'm sure it's a screening issue and could be down to the quality of the screen on the cable I'm using.
