Many years ago, the year has been forgotten as has the original source, I remember reading about a US Army officer in World War I that wanted/needed to get a message to the headquarters. The unit the officer commanded did not have a working radio. The officer sent a runner through enemy lines to HQ telling them how the message would be sent. The officer then tied bell wire to two bayonets and stuck them in the ground several yards apart. The other end of the bell wire was connected to a telegraph key.
