This Elecraft document http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/PSK31_KSB2_mods.htm describes a modification that was made to early K2s that was since I believe incorporated in production. It changes the way the ALC works in data modes. It specifically recommends setting the level to one bar of ALC. I have always operated my K2 like that and when I have monitored my signal on another radio the IMD is typically -32dB.
