I had two wires reversed.. their color was not obvious so I'll blame it on that

It sounds like you might have the lead form the shell of the connector (ground)
connected to the dash contact, and the dash lead connected to the common. This
would give you dashes correctly, but dots only when both are pressed
(alternating dots and dashes).
