Have you ever been exposed to the "joys" of Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style"? I was able to avoid it in undergrad school but it was a required text in my law school's Legal Writing class, as well as the Holy Writ for the resident grammarian to whom I've been married for a couple of decades.
