The way the K3 behave seems absolutely normal. You cannot have your cake and eat it.
To be able to send CW while in SSB the rig has to be in VOX mode.
When PTT is engaged you must first press the PTT to transmit and if the rig is in SSB mode it will transmit in SSB. I have a question: is the PTT/VOX setting mode specific? Can you have PTT in SSB and VOX in CW? My FT-897 is set that way: PTT for SSB and VOX for CW. If I listen in SSB and want to transmit CW - for example when a weak station does not hear me - I just hit the paddles. To trasmit in SSB I press the foot switch. I am not a fan of VOX in SSB. If I wanted to use PTT to switch an amplifier SSB and CW would have to use the PTT mode and I would lose the auto CW feature, nothing I could do about it.
