One early commercial receiver featured a volume control with a pointer and
scale with a 1 at full volume and a 9 near minimum volume. The operator
turned in a station, adjusted the volume for a comfortable listening level,
and read the "S" (signal strength) off of the volume control. 

Recently a couple of the fellows here commented on how modern rigs are
removing the need for the operator to think. Perhaps the S-meter, or that
"calibrated" volume control, was the true beginning of that trend :-)
