I plug and unplug serial cables into my PC and K3 all the time without worrying about powering down either the PC or the K3. If equipment tended to be sensitive and were damaged by this action it would be common knowledge, and vendors of this sort of equipment would be have to deal with many customer support issues. Successful vendors would implement a solution that isn't bothered by these (reasonable) customer actions. I've not heard that this is a problem. I think the supplied fiber and toothed lock washers are too small in diameter for the width of the speaker mounting slots. It's pretty difficult to keep them from slipping through the slots, and then the screws go crooked.. I finally gave up and just used larger fiber washers. I also updated the firmware, no problem. Used a straight serial connection to the PC. But I'm wondering, would it be okay to plug in the serial cable while the K3 and PC are powered up? Here's an assembly hint... Use a magnetized screwdriver. It is much, much more convenient!
