You're right that it is uncommon. Properly installed, the fans are completely inaudible. I believe all the instances where fan noise has been encountered were traced down to some kind of assembly error. Probably Don could point you in the right direction. (Of course, a bad fan is possible as well. Just never heard of one on this list.)
