I was tinkering with the SQ MAIN menu setting in FW version 2.38 and hit the DISP button for an explanation. It says ". tap '1' to use squelch in all modes".
Sounds like a nice feature, but it's not working for me. Squelch only works in FM. Is the DISP text out ahead of the feature?
