Good Evening,
A dry week has passed here in Oregon. It was nice to be able to work
outside in the sunshine. Twenty meters was adequate but not great while
working my daily skeds. Now that I have two antennas up it is interesting to
follow along as QSB changes the propagation. Sometimes one antenna works
better, sometimes the other, and then there are times when neither is up to the
task. Deer hunting season has begun. I just talked to a hunter off the edge
of my property. He understood about the off limits area in one corner of my
land where deer and elk often have their young. We chatted for a while about
the very few elk and where the deer were scattered around the mountain before
he drove off.
The next few days are to be rather warm. Mid to upper 80s. That means the
fire danger will rise again to where it will become dangerous. But with all
the nearby clear cuts any fires would not be sustained. No need to cut
firebreaks with all open areas around. Some of them have been cleared down to
soil because the market for chips is so lucrative. Sometimes the timber from
the clearcuts is all chipped instead of sawn. They also do this to clear storm
damaged areas. It does leave little to form new soil however.
Upon reading SpaceWeather I find we are between solar streams. That is why
the bands got more quiet over the last day. Sometime on the 14th we are due to
be hit by a new stream so QRN will go up again. But without sunspots this is
the only way to recharge the ionosphere. We did have a spot yesterday but it
has vanished. Is this a harbinger of things to come? One never knows where
the peak or the valley of a sunspot cycle is until well afterwards. I think
crossing fingers may be in order :)

Please join us tomorrow evening.
