Hello all,

This past weekend I was joined by Scott, N3SW, as we hiked twenty-one
miles on the Appalachian Trail from Pine Grove State Park to Caledonia
State Park here in Pennsylvania. The scenery was just beautiful with the
fall leaf colors on all the mountains we hiked over and through. The
first day we hiked around 4.5 miles to Toms Run Shelters. These two
shelters looked new! I put up my tent and Scott slept in his hammock.
Friday night I worked N4BP in the contest and later we just sat by the
campfire and then to bed in around 35' weather. Saturday we awoke to
just above freezing temperatures, but clear blue skies. We eat breakfast
and then hiked around 6.5 miles to Birch Run Shelter. Again this shelter
looks new! Scott and myself found a nice campsite about 100 yards from
the shelter to set up camp. After setting up our camp, we played radio
and I worked W8AT! How about that call W8(AT)! Yes my Elecraft
"Pimped-Out" KX1 worked great the entire hike. Oh yes, I forgot to
mention that I forgot my BW Antenna, but Scott had an extra Norcal
Doublet so I used that antenna on 30m. Saturday night we again made a
nice campfire and sat around the fire talking and listening to the Penn
State Football game and later the baseball game. It was a great evening
and the fire kept us warm. Sunday we packed up and hiked some gorgeous
trail with elevations over two thousand feet. This section was a
ten-mile hike back to Caledonia S.P.

The hike was great as we met lots of people on the trail and at the
shelters. We met two grandparents shadowing their grandson and his dog
as they hiked the AT, a group of seven girls, a south-bounder and many
more. It was a great experience that will forever stay with me. Thank
you Scott, N3SW, for hiking with me.
